Sixteen split pearls surround a central lattice of woven hair in a panel beneath glass. The substantial gold band gives this the feel of a modern cocktail ring. The inclusion of hair had long been a defining element of mourning jewellery, which dates back as far at the 16th century. These pieces gained cult status in Victorian times when the eponymous Queen lead a period of extensive public mourning for her husband Albert.
